Prof. Dr. Penina Axelrad

is Professor and Associate Chair of Aerospace Engineering Sciences (AES) with the Colorado Center for Astrodynamics Research at the University of Colorado, Boulder. She received the Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University and S.B. and S.M from MIT. Prior to joining the faculty at CU, Dr. Axelrad was a member of the technical staff at Stanford Telecommunications, Inc. She has been active in research on GPS technology and applications since 1985, publishing 31 journal papers and 80 conference papers, and serving as primary dissertation advisor for 12 Ph.D. graduates. Dr. Axelrad is a Fellow of the U.S. Institute of Navigation, an Associate Fellow of the AIAA, a senior member of IEEE and a member of Sigma Xi. Her contributions to the GPS field have been recognized by the 1996 Lawrence Sperry Award from the AIAA and the 2003 Tycho Brahe Award from the ION.

GNSS Applications in Science, Earth Observation and for the Environment

This lecture provides an overview of various applications from high precision positioning of satellites and ground-based receivers for geodesy, spacecraft attitude determination, and remote sensing of the atmosphere using GNSS occultations and of the land and ocean surfaces using GNSS reflections.
